Notes |
- Peter Ludwig was always "Uncle Louie" to children. It is reported that his gravestone in New York Bay Cemetery shows first name as "Petrof", but a letter from Edna Platz in 1987 reports that the gravestone shows his name as Peter Ludwig.
He immigrated to America at the age of 24 in 1908, arriving in New York 16 April 1908 aboard the SS Seydlitz from Bremen; he appeared to be traveling alone. His name is misspelled as Ludwid Gansak in the website index. He listed his father as Ludwig Fausak, of Janowka, Poland as his closest relative in Europe. He paid for his own fare, and came with $32; his destination was his brother Edward Fausak in Jersey City NJ. He was able to read and write.
He was a witness at the marriage of half-brother Emil Fausak to Ottilie Kunkel at St. Matthews Church in 1910.
Listed in 1910 census records as boarder with Edward and Pauline Ratke, 133 Morris Street, Jersey City NJ. His name was spelled Fausek in census records. It is shown that he spoke Polish and could read and write. He was listed in the records as a laborer at a sugar house (?).
He lived at 142 Morris Street, Jersey City at the time of his marriage to Helene Radtke in 1913. Witnesses at the marriage were Leonard Look, Amanda Fausak, Julius Hirsch, and Lydia Radtke.
There is some question about whether he and Helen ever had children. The daughter shown here is speculative; she is not shown on the 1930 census with Peter and Helene.
The 1920 federal census records show Ludwig Fansak (sic), age 37, and Helen, age 31, at 110 Morris Street, Jersey City; there are no children shown. Both entered the US in 1908, and had been naturalized in 1915. Ludwig was shown as a foreman in a factory, and Helen had no stated occupation.
The 1930 federal census shows Ludwig and Helen (only) residing at 114 Neptune Avenue, Jersey City NJ. His occupation was Carpenter, Lehigh Valley RR, and Helen was shown as a housewife.
SS# 140-07-5492 (NJ). When he applied for a SS account on 27 November 1936, he resided at 32 Atlantic St., Jersey City NJ, and was employed by Baker Castor Oil Co. in Jersey City. He spelled his mother's surname on the application as Schinke.
