Notes |
- Martha arrived in the US at the age of 17 on 11 October 1923 aboard the SS Sierra Ventana sailing from Bremen; a copy of the ship's manifest was obtained from the Ellis Island website in Nov 2001. She is recorded to have arrived in the US with $5.00. She was 5'2" and had red hair and brown eyes. Her previous residence was shown as Muschaken, East Prussia; her mother is shown as Luise Fausak. Her destination was NJ, to join her brother Emil Fausak at 255 16th Avenue, West New York NJ.
Martha was believed (perhaps mistakenly) to have been brought over from Germany at the age of about 21 after WWI, sponsored by her sister Amanda. Amanda and Leon Look traveled to Europe in 1920 or 1921 to visit their parents and Martha was sent over shortly thereafter. The Looks apparently had some difficulty with her life style (she openly smoked and consumed alcohol), and she was therefore given over to the care of her Uncle Emil. He also was not able to get her to conform to family norms. She was described as "a real character, with a big mouth and a big heart".
At the time of her marriage to John Dien at the age of 22 in 1927, she was living at 225 Erie St., Jersey City NJ.
By the time of her second marriage to Sigmund Pacholec, her last name was spelled Dean. Her bp was shown as Germany and she was shown to be widowed. At that time (at the age of 27) she lived at 114 Coles St., Jersey City. Leo was a plasterer, and this was his first marriage.

Documents |
 | Fausak, Martha; 1906; Russian language birth record from Janowko, gm. Sonsk, Poland. "This happened in Przasnysz on the 9th/28th of July 1906 at 1:00 in the afternoon. Ludwig Fausak, farmer from Janowko, 59 years old, appeared and in the presence of witnesses Alexander Neslakowski(?), 42 years old, a farmer from Gasocin and Julius Kuschke(?), 43 years old, a farmer from Konstantynowo, presented to us a child of the female sex stating that she was born in Janowko on the 19th of June/2nd of July 3 of this year from his lawful wife Louise born Hein, 44 years old. To this child at holy baptism performed on this day was given the name Martha. The godparents were the first witness and Caroline Rennspies. This document, late because of the father's family circumstances, was read aloud to all illiterate witnesses and signed by us alone. Pastor Oscar Ernst." |
 | Fausak, Martha; 1923; Ellis Island entry record Martha apparently traveled alone; her nearest relative in Europe is shown as Louise Fausak. Presumably her father Ludwig Fausak has died by this time. |
