    Notes
    • Emigrated to America in 1907 at the age of 19; according to his son Albert Emil Fausak, he may have jumped ship illegally, but that appears not to be the case. In the naturalization papers of Adolf Rennspies, Emil is shown as arriving on the same vessel, the SS Smolensk, arriving in New York from Rotterdam on 28 June 1907. The Ellis Island are available online at www.ellisisland.org, and the entry for Emil and Adolf can be found there, indexed under Adolf Rewzlis (sic) or Emil Farzak (sic). Both Adolf and Emil listed Edward Fausak (180 Warren Streen, Jersey City NJ) as their American contact or sponsor; significantly, Edward Fausak is listed as "stepbrother" of Adolf Rennspies and brother of Emil Fausak.

His confirmation certificate (the original with Albert Emil Fausak in 1997), shows his birthplace as Brzeziny; his confirmation occurred at the Evangelical Lutheran church in Wola Wodzynska. (He gave his birthplace as Janowke when he entered America in 1907). The confirmation certificate was dated 15 March 1904 and showed his name as Emil Vausack; it was imprinted with a partially legible stamp with the word Przasnysz, a town located to the southeast of Neidenburg (Nidzica, Poland).

Emil related to his children that the Fausak family originated in the Brandenburg region (in or near Berlin), but there was no explanation of when the family lived there or how they came to move to present-day Poland. Emil believed that at that unknown time the family were caretakers on a baron's estate ("Gut Besitzer").

Emil Fausack filed a Declaration of Intention (for US citizenship) in Kings County NY in 1910. The record, which has not yet been accessed, is reported to be on page 259, volume 27 of the Kings County Clerk's Office records (Brooklyn NY).

His marriage at the age of 21 to Ottilie (Adele) was recorded in Book IV of St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Jersey City NJ. He lived at that time at 138 Morris St., Jersey City NJ. Witnesses at the wedding were Ludwig Fausak (i.e., Peter Ludwig Fausak), Bertha Kunkel (Ottilie's sister), Leon Lauck (sic), and Lena Kunkel.

He and his sister Amanda (with her 2 year old daughter Bertha) traveled to Muschaken, East Prussia in late 1923 to visit their mother Louisa. Their US re-entry records are available at www.ellisisland.org under the spelling Fauzak. They sailed from Bremen on 4 Dec 1923 aboard the SS Seydlitz and arrived in New York on 17 Dec 1923. Residences for both Emil and Amanda at that time are shown as West New York. Emil is shown as having entered the US in 1907 and Amanda as entering in 1911. The date of 29 August 1923 also appears on the manifest and may indicate their date of departure on this trip. Both give as a reference Eduard Fauzak, 421 Jackson Avenue, Jersey City NJ. Emil gave his place of birth as Radynim, Poland and Amanda gave hers as Janowska, Poland.

Emil returned to visit his mother Louisa in East Prussia in 1924; he returned to the US on Dec 22 on the North German Lloyd liner SS Columbus. The ship's manifest is available from www.ellisisland.org; it shows his address at that time as 668 Tyler Place, West New York NJ. It also shows that he was naturalized on 14 October 1912 at City Court, Jersey City NJ. There is no indication that he traveled with anyone else.

He returned to Prussia again with his family (wife Adele, son Albert Emil, daughter Bertha, and sisterBertha, and sister-in-law Bertha nee Kunkel Semmler) in 1928. Albert Emil recalls leaving Berlin by chauffeured limosine, driving across the Polish corridor, and passing through the walled cities of Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) and Thorn (Torun); he recalled that people within the city walls were German, those outside were Poles.

Emil bought a farm in Connecticut (where daughter Bertha was born).

The 1930 federal census (Jersey City, Hudson Co, NJ, 12th ward, ED 9-186, SD 6, sheet 17B, 11 Apr 1930) shows the family at 475 Central Avenue in Jersey City, comprising Emil and Adele, Albert, and Bertha. Adele is shown as 3 years older than Emil. Albert was born in New York, and Bertha was born in Connecticutt. Emil is shown as immigrating in 1901, and Adele in 1907. (Adele was reported to have died on 1 Apr 1930, 10 days before the census taker visited their home; why does her name appear on the census?)

Adele died of cancer in 1930. Several months afterward, Emil married again. Emil's son Albert Emil has (in 1997) a large format photograph of the wedding reception for Emil and his second wife Martha Harthaus (nee Schellhorn), who was a widow.

Arriced in the Port of New York on 27 Sep 1935 aboard the S.S. Hamburg ex-Hamburg on 19 Sep 1935. This trip occurred only a few months after his naturalization as a United States citizen. He apparently was traveling alone, and the purpose of this trip is unknown.
