    Notes
    • Name also reported as Hulda Leichwitz and Hilda Leichnitz. Her birthplace on the 1920 census records is shown as Warsaw.

She entered the US in 1900 (according to the 1930 federal census records) and married in 1904, when her marriage is recorded in the registry of St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jersey City NJ. At the time of her marriage at the age of 23 in 1904 (at St. Matthew's Church), she lived at 133 Morris Street, Jersey City NJ (same address as Gottlieb, Carl, and Anna Fausak). Witnesses at the marriage were Edward Fausak and Lizzie Neumann.

She (and Gottlieb?) apparently returned to Europe sometime between 1905 and 1911 with her son Albert; she re-entered the United States at the age of 29 with three sons Albert (age 6), Ludwig (age 3), and Alfred (age 2) in 1911. (Albert is shown on the 1920 census as born in Jersey City, whereas Ludwig and Albert were shown in the census as born in Mogowo, Poland).

The ship's manifest for the 1911 entry is available at www.ellisisland.org. Her name on that manifest is shown as Hulda Fausak. They arrived on 4 Dec 1911 from Rotterdam aboard SS Nieuw Amsterdam. She was apparently traveling with a sister, a single 19-year old woman named Martha Haase, whose record immediately followed Hulda's, and who was also from Pomocna, Poland. Both Hulda's and Martha's father is shown as Johann Haase of Pomoczne (sic), Warsaw, Russia. The entry record also shows a previous entry to the US from 1896-1905.

So, was Hulda's maiden name Leichwitz or Haase? (Perhaps Johann Haase was her step-father, but Martha's true father; would mean that Johann Haase married the widowed mother of Hulda some time between 1881 and 1889.)

Died of broncho-pneumonia, according to death record of St. Matthew's; she was survived by her husband and 3 sons.

Her gravestone in New York Bay Cemetery is reported to show her name as Hulda and her birth year as 1880.
