John Hazel was a combat engineer, with a field commission to staff Sgt. C.E.s handled the construction and demolition aspects of the military. He, however was in Belgium when the Battle of the Bulge broke out in December 1944, and like everyone else, became an infantryman.

Photo believed to have been taken in New Germany MN after Eduard and Bertha retired from farming and were in the process of moving from ND to MI. They were visiting the second man from the left, believed to be Rev. John Meyer (no known relation to Eduard), who had been the pastor of the Monango and Merricourt Lutheran churches in Dickey Co. ND, and who had moved to New Germnay MN in July 1942. Rev. Meyer traveled to Stevensville MI to preach the funeral sermon for Eduard Meyer in Dec 1942.
